Description
Summary:It often is necessary to conduct a cost-benefit type analysis of a light duty program in order to justify returning sick or injured workers to the job as soon as it is medically possible. Many employers are faced with problems, since workers in a light duty program are compensated at a rate exceeding the workers compensation rate they would receive if not participating. A measurement technique is described that is used for the evaluation of a nontraditional light duty program -- the work therapy program -- of a coal mining company. The method begins with the quantification of the percentage of work that the light duty person is performing and ends with a calculation of the total cost-benefit in dollars for each individual in the program. Calculations associated with the methodology indicate that total savings for the 29 persons in the work therapy program for 4 months amounted to $26,608, affirming a positive cost-benefit ratio for the sponsoring coal company.
