Summary:A number of principles of professional advancement for economists are discussed. The first principle is to have good students. The value of good students is evidenced by publications. A number of papers are developed during classroom exposition and discussion with students. The 2nd principle is: To advance one's career, one has to be smart enough to have had the right teachers. The 3rd principle is to plan to be at the place where training happens to be useful - at the right time. The 4th principle is to make frequent use of coauthors, and the 5th principle is to have superb and cooperative colleagues.
