Summary: | Toward that end, Sembene followed a radical pro-independence line against what he considered to be a tendency of colonial assimilation and the promotion of Negritude, the cultural and literary movement associated with Aime Cesaire and Leopold S. Senghor. In 1951, Sembene joined the Movement Against Racism, Anti-Semitism, and for Peace (Mourap), a political organization that emerged from the French resistance movement during World War II. Said, the late Palestinian writer, believed that the terrain of art and cultural representation were, in addition to politics, a sine qua non for freedom and the regeneration of community. |
