Summary: | Gabriele Giannini, Un guide français de Terre sainte, entre Orient latin et Toscane occidentale, Recherches littéraires médiévales 21 (Paris: Classiques Garnier, 2016). 352 pp. ISBN 978-2-406-05931-8. €39.00. The author gives a meticulous analysis of all six manuscripts and their other contents, in order to establish the context in which this Pilgrim's Guide was transmitted: in each case the other texts match Holy Land interests to a varying degree and their scripta reflects the French of the Levant as well as western Tuscany.Especially notable is MS W, Vienna, ÖNB Cod. 2590, which is exceptional in having four illustrations for the Guide: at the opening (fol. 96a) showing two pilgrims walking between two buildings; their arrival at the Holy Sepulchre with Christ on the cross between the Virgin and St John (fol. 96d); the Baptism of Christ by John the Baptist, observed by an angel (fol. 97d); and a pilgrim witnessing the Annunciation to the Virgin (fol. 98b). |
