Summary:This paper investigates one stage in the process of internationalisation: the formation of a manufacturing subsidiary or joint venture in an overseas market. The sequential model of the internationalisation process (Johanson and Vahlne, 1977; Welch and Luostarinen, 1988) is developed and tested using the experience of 50 UK manufacturing companies. The results do not support a narrowly incremental view of the process of internationalisation.
