Summary:This study examines twenty inhibiting factors in five major categories in terms of their level of difficulty and their degree of importance for export performance of 49 exporters and 47 non-exporters. The results indicate that inhibitors encountered by exporters are very different compared to inhibitors confronted by non-exporters. More specifically, exporters regard the strength of the U.S. dollar, competition overseas, and locating foreign distributors to be significant barriers to their exporting activity; while the non-exporters consider lack of knowledge and procedure of exporting to be dominant inhibitors for them. These results suggest that different export oriented educational and promotional programs are needed for these two groups.
