Description
Summary:This study explores demographic patterns and social topography in Nya Lödöse by studying the material from the cemetery excavated in 2013. The cemetery is seen here not only as a place to bury the dead, but also as a place where social identity is presented and negotiated, in more or less subtle ways. A cemetery can also show social stratification as well as cultural diversity, both of which were present in Nya Lödöse. The ongoing excavation of the cemetery will hopefully show general characteristics of different traditions and behavior connected to the burials. Once completed, the survey will give good insight into demography, burial customs and social identity in an early-modern Swedish town.
