Summary: | The indiscriminate nature of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology creates unique privacy issues. Currently privacy standards for the type of information gathered through RFID and the use of that information do not exist. RFID is a part of everyday life already. A future challenge when creating policies concerning the item-level RFID tags, is to develop privacy standards that go beyond the narrow understanding of privacy evidenced in Fair Information Practice Principles, while allowing increased efficiency and effectiveness through the use of RFID. The authors address this challenge by integrating several theoretical lenses of privacy in this article and applying an integrative approach to data collected using RFID. In Part II of this article, they provide the relevant background for their discussion, including the capabilities of RFID and related technologies that raise issues of privacy protection. This part concludes by applying the Integrative Considerations to data collected by RFID. |
