Summary:Few would deny that the Dao De Jing is a puzzling text. One puzzle that has particularly vexed interpreters in recent years is how to understand the central term of the text, 'dao.' Angle and Gordon contend that the puzzle surrounding style can be unraveled if one views the style (zi) as a kind of nickname and that understanding dao as the nickname for an un-nameable thing solves the puzzle about what dao itself means throughout the text.
