Description
Summary:This paper examines the several identities currently attributed to Jacques Cartier’s Stadacona and Hochelaga. Identities derived largely by historians from documentary sources originating prior to the last 40 years are contrasted with identities derived largely by anthropologists from the archaeological and linguistic evidence that has been available since the 1950s. Because the more current research is not being used by some historians who seek to explain sixteenth-century events in the St Lawrence Valley, their perceptions of New France in this context are skewed by limitations inherent in pre-1950 documentary and cartographic sources.
