Description
Summary:Convective activity such as tropical cyclone (TC) governed by geophysical fluid dynamics is among the most devastating natural disasters known to human society. Modeling TC wind field is of specific importance for the engineering, climatological and insurance point of view. The present study discusses the development of tropical cyclone wind fields based on the most commonly used gradient wind model of Holland. The model creates a two-dimensional surface wind field using the best track information on cyclone characteristics as input parameter from India Meteorological Department. A total of five significant historical storms making landfall along the east and west coast of Indian subcontinent are considered for the case study. Modeled winds are calibrated and validated against the anemometer observations. Model sensitivity to varying Holland’s parameter ( B ) and peripheral pressure ( P n ) is also elucidated. Comparisons of modeled winds with observations show good agreement indicating the capability of model for the application of hazard assessment and risk management.
