Summary:An abstract of a study by Fehrman et al evaluating the effects of feeding calcium hydroxide treated corn stover during backgrounding on carcass characteristics and beef quality is presented. The use of calcium hydroxide treated corn stover in backgrounding diets of beef calves doesn't affect carcass characteristics, moisture loss, or Warner-Bratzler shear force, but does have minimal impact on ground beef shelf life.
