Description
Summary:The failure aspects of composites are available for plates, but studies of the literature on shells unveils that similar reports on them are very limited in number. The aim of this work was to investigate the first-ply-failure of industrially and aesthetically important spherical shells under uniform loadings. Apart from solving benchmark problems, numerical experiments were carried out with different variations of their parameters to obtain the first-ply-failure stresses by using the finite-element method. The load was increased in steps, and the lamina strains and stresses were put into well-established failure criteria to evaluate their first-ply-failure stress, the failed ply, the point of initiation of failure, and failure modes and tendencies. The results obtained are analyzed to extract the points of engineering significance.
