Summary: | This paper summarizes the environmental legacy of the Soviet period in Moscow, analyzes current trends, and surveys future prospects for environmental quality based on detailed understanding of the city's geography. Two maps generated by ongoing, street-level research-one delineating actual areas of impact based on degree and type of pollution, the other categorizing administrative districts in terms of environmental damage-are presented. Additionally, the distribution of pollution by Moscow's 10 prefectures is analyzed. Such detailed environmental geography should help establish priorities for pollution abatement/amelioration programs, crucial for Moscow to complete its metamorphosis from Soviet to world city.
