Summary: | The next few years will see an explosion of mobile display applications (VR, AR, HUD, smartwatches, MR,…). These require greater energy efficiency (longer battery life), higher brightness (outdoors viewing), and the new AR/VR/MR applications need much higher resolution. Incumbent technologies — OLEDs, LCDs and LCOS — cannot improve much in energy efficiency and brightness. There has been a big interest in LEDs for displays because their very high energy efficiency and brightness could give major benefits in the resulting products. However 2D “microLEDs” have many obstacles to overcome and may have big difficulties in reaching high resolution. Aledia's 3D nanowire LEDs built on large‐area silicon resolve these problems, do so very cost‐effectively, and can impact several categories of mobile displays. |
