Summary: | Ages since early human existence, many natural materials by instinct, induction or trial and error got in use for combating human ailments. [...]traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Homeopathy etc, depend heavily on natural products. HepG2 (Human liver hepatocellular carcinoma cell line), was cultured in DMEM supplemented with 10% inactivated Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS), penicillin (100 IU/ml), streptomycin (100 pg/ml) and amphotericin B (5 pg/ml) in an humidified atmosphere of 5% CO2 at 37°C until confluent. The phytochemical tests revealed that the leaves of Mussaenda frondosa Linn possess presence of various secondary metabolites like flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, tannins, phenolic compounds as shown in Table-2. Since the methanolic extract shows higher concentration of chemical constituents it was subjected for the further study. [...]the present findings provide scientific evidence that methanolic extract and the isolated flavonoid fraction of Mussaenda frondosa Linn can be used as a potent anticancer agent. |
