Description
Summary:I begin this article by identifying and describing the core attributes shared by members of the methods community. This description relies on information from the history of the SPM, the qualitative experiences of methodologists (including myself), and quantitative data from 10 years of published abstracts in Political Analysis and the American Political Science Review. I find that methodologists are focused on building, assessing, and improving quantitative models and techniques that are not merely of abstract interest, but of immediate practical importance to studying the substantive problems of political science. Then, I discuss what is required to be considered an active member of the methods community.
