Summary:Background and objectives: Introduction: Food choice is influenced by several factors, including sensory, economic, social, cultural, and psychological aspects, and is related to social environment and personal history and values. Objective: To describe the factors that influence food choice in adolescents according to sex, weight, and physical activity level. Methods: The study investigated 405 6th and 7th graders from two public schools in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Data were collected in 2014 using a multidimensional questionnaire. Adolescents were asked to select, among 15 options, the 3 most important reasons for their food choice, which were categorized as: sensory aspects ("taste", "color", "smell", "appearance"), sociocultural aspects ("habit", "my family usually eat", "my friends like", "low-calorie foods", "religion"), economic/access aspects ("have in my house", "price", "easy to buy", "easy to prepare"), and "healthy eating".
