Summary: | Data are presented from a study of professional identities of Swiss environmentalists to address the question of whether professional identities are vanishing due to rapid changes in the labor market, and how professional identities are formed today. A psychological approach compares professionals with different grades of expertise; the sociological approach compares occupational groups of different grades of professionalization. Professional identities in the study were assessed by using a questionnaire of psychological items concerned with self-concept, self-esteem, and control beliefs. The study provides evidence for a persistent dependence of professional identities on professions and professionalization. |
