Summary:The objective of this paper is to identify the cost coding conundrum and to highlight the issues faced by the project controls team in maintaining project information during the project life. In addition to this it will provide insight into the collection of consistent information for benchmarking and reporting the project outcome. This paper highlights cost coding challenges by conducting a survey with project controls personnel to collect opinions about communal issues faced by project controls. Once the cost coding issues are outlined, each issue is analyzed in detail and responses from the survey will support the analysis. Finally a path forward has been identified for future project coding. It be noted that the framework and specifics of coding are not discussed in this paper.
