Summary: | The objective of this paper is to determine the personal characteristics that influence the support for an increase in spending for welfare programs across various income groups. Subjective perceptions of income mobility and upward mobility on the preferences for income redistribution and regional variations for welfare demand are examined. We use data from the General Social Survey (2002) and perform an ordered probit regression analysis. The results reveal that men have a social insurance motive and women have a public good (altruistic) motive when considering welfare spending. |
