Description
Summary:Abraham Bergman from the University of Washington was the recipient of the first Public Policy and Advocacy Award in 1998, in part because of his efforts to ban flammable children's bed wear, which had contributed to significant increases in morbidity and mortality to children involved in fire situations. In 2002, Ellen Crain, a former APA president, established the Environmental Health Scholars Program to support young researchers committed to making the environment a safer place for children and their families. Contributions are important for three reasons: 1 they increase the capital assets of the fund, 2 as the assets increase, more dollars are available from dividends to support APA programmatic activities without adding to the annual budget or tapping reserves, and importantly, 3 when the APA approaches foundations for funding, foundations are more receptive if we can demonstrate that a large percentage of our membership support our development fund.
