Description
Summary:This paper presents a review of the most used technologies for the treatment of wastewater from the oil industry in Colombia and worldwide. The starting point of this study is the characterization of oil production and the oil–water relationship; then the harmful effects of wastewater are described; and the final destinations of these waters are quantified. Finally, some conventional and unconventional wastewater treatments are described. It is clear that, despite of the progresses made in this matter, there is a broad field of research that has to be explored to seek more efficient and economic techniques to eliminate certain recalcitrant pollutants.
