Summary: | Isabelle Proulx and Landis Hare INRS-ETE, Université du Québec, Québec City, Québec G1K 9A9, Canada landis@ete.inrs.ca Measurements of contaminants in animals are an important component of ecological risk assessments because they provide the link between contaminant exposure and toxicity. With these facts in mind, we measured cadmium (Cd) in the aquatic fly Chironomus (Diptera, Chironomidae) to determine whether species in this widespread and ecologically important genus vary markedly in their accumulation of this metal at a given site and among lakes. Chironomus species were separated on the basis of the morphology of their larval head capsule, tubuli on the posterior abdominal segments, and giant polytene chromosomes located in the salivary glands, as well as by the use of genetic techniques. |
