Summary: | The Accounting Education Change Commission (AECC) has focused attention on the importance of enriched teaching in the first accounting course. One tool for addressing many of the AECC's recommendations is the use in the classroom of readings from the popular press. However, the potential of this tool is not realized if an article is simply distributed, along with a request for students to read the article and be prepared to discuss it. The use of such articles can be made more effective and interesting if the articles are accompanied by questions to help students learn to do systematic and critical analyses. The study provides a framework for asking the right sequence of questions. Examples are used to illustrate how the framework can be applied to articles from the popular press. |
