Summary:This study examines the motivational factors as well as constraining factors faced by women in the beer parlour business. It takes into account the essential and practical factors that motivate women’s entry into and survival in the beer parlour business in Ibadan, Nigeria. The rational choice theory was employed as the theoretical framework for conducting this study. Using the exploratory survey design, analysis of 384 questionnaires and interviews distributed to respondents revealed that majority of women engaged in beer parlour business for the purpose of financial profits. However, it also found out that majority of the women in beer parlour business encountered various challenges in the course of operating their business. Based on these findings, it was recommended that proper planning is important before venturing into a business and that credit facilities should be put in place to enable women have easy access to finance.
