Summary: | Education has been the cornerstone for developing the capabilities of Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) staff. This article highlights APL’s various formal educational programs, focusing on the graduate education program that started in the late 1950s and has blossomed into the Engineering for Professionals program-the largest professional graduate engineering program in the nation. Under the joint auspices of APL and the Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering, the Engineering for Professionals program continues to grow, with annual enrollments approaching the 10,000 mark. The program also tailors partnerships to meet the unique needs of industrial and governmental organizations. In addition to this degree-granting program, APL offers the Strategic Education Program, with noncredit advancedlevel technical and scientific courses that are tailored to the specific needs of APL’s staff. Details of this highly successful internal education program are presented, along with brief descriptions of several other educational initiatives at the Lab. |
