Summary: | Mumps is a vaccine-preventable viral infection characterized by fever and inflammation of the salivary glands and whose complications include orchitis, deafness, and meningo-encephalitis. In August 2009, CDC was notified of the onset of an outbreak of mumps in a summer camp in Sullivan County, New York. The outbreak has spread and gradually increased in size and is now the largest US mumps outbreak since 2006, when the US experienced a resurgence of mumps with 6,584 reported cases. Here, High et al investigate the mumps outbreak in 2009 that happened in New York, New Jersey, and Quebec, Canada. A CDC editorial note is included. |
