Summary:Block et al reviewed the efficacy of postoperative epidural analgesia vs parental opioids, the primary alternative technique. They found that epidural analgesia, regardless of analgesic agent, location of catheter placement, and type of pain assessment, provided significantly better postoperative pain control than parental opioids in a meta-analysis of randomized trails comparing postoperative epidural analgesia with parental opioids.
