Description
Summary:The review briefly outlines recent results of the investigation of regularities of nucleation of collective elastic vortex-shaped motions (elastic vortices) in zones of contact interaction of solids and their role in irreversible strain accumulation and fracture in the surface layers. It is shown that an elastic vortex is a scale-invariant localized dynamic object that is characterized by a high concentration of shear stress and propagates at a shear wave speed. It is capable to initiate nonelastic deformation (including rotational one) or even fracture (in brittle material) and is of great importance for materials with highly stressed internal interfaces.
