Description
Summary:An earthquake had struck Ranau, Sabah with a moment magnitude (Mw) of 6.0 on 5th June 2015. Ranau 2015 earthquake are not only lead to a few deaths but also had leave a lot of damage on the building structure in Ranau District. The implication of earthquakes affects the building that was not designed according to seismic loading. In multi-storey buildings, damages are due to location of irregularities where large concentration of stresses leads to failure. Soft storey collapse is one such reason for failure of framed structures during earthquake. Soft storey buildings which abrupt change in storey stiffness have adverse effect on the performance of buildings during ground shaking. In the recent Ranau earthquake, a hand-full of buildings suffered typical damage such as cracking. These incidents have implied that not all existing buildings in Sabah are capable to reach a minimum required level of performance in earthquakes with the magnitude of high as 6.0 Scale Richter. Therefore, seismic structural analysis which utilized detailed modelling of the structure together with methods of structural dynamics required to completely define the resulting the structural deformation behavior under expected seismic loads. Thus, the aim of this paper is to model the structural deformation of Staff Quarters SMK Ranau when subjected to the 2015 Ranau Earthquake with 6.0 Magnitude of Scale Ritcher and Peak Ground Acceleration of 0.12g at various time history. Besides that, the post-earthquake on-site visual observation of Staff Quarters SMK Ranau after 2015 Ranau Earthquake is also discussed in this paper.
