Summary: | The choice of the interleaver may significantly affect the performance of short codes when they are used in serial concatenation. By focusing on the minimum distance of the overall concatenated code, we propose an algorithmic method for the design of good interleavers. As a valuable example of application, we consider the case of polar codes concatenated with cyclic redundancy check codes. For these codes, the method we propose is compared with classical approaches based on random searches to assess its advantages, which are also confirmed through examples of practical coded transmissions over the binary erasure channel. |
