Summary: | Schubmehl and Sussman thank Drs. Butala and Pontone for their response and would like to clarify and expand upon several points that the authors brought to our attention. Our commentary did not intend to raise ethical concerns related to the development of the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms-Parkinson's disease or the phase 3 trial. Nonetheless, they felt it was important to draw attention to the industry affiliations of various authors for two reasons: First, there is strong evidence that research conducted by authors with financial relationships with pharmaceutical companies is more likely to result in proindustry conclusions, and for this reason such research should be interpreted with an awareness of the potential for bias. Here, Schubmehl and Sussman demonstrate the efficacy of pimavanserin. |
