Summary: | Within the framework of early modern world history, empire building and migration provide opportunities to investigate the hierarchies of race, gender, and national identity in the classroom. The most well-known example comes from the pluralistic American cities and villages in the Spanish and Portuguese empires. These and other multicultural societies formed around ethnic hierarchies driven by the politics of sexual interaction. A comparative exploration of these communities offers the opportunity to introduce students into the fascinating new social hierarchies that emerged in the wake of early modern migration streams, long-distance trading networks, and imperial regimes. |
