Summary: | Di Giacomo et al comment on the study by Ruiz and Madariaga on a comprehensive review of recent and historical large earthquakes in Chile by considering the literature, tsunami effects and the rheological characterization of the plate interface between the Nazca and South-American plates. In doing so the authors gathered data from a multitude of publications and data repositories (such as earthquake catalogues) to characterize the large thrust earthquakes in Chile. By considering the recommendation by the International Seismological Centre on the best possible account of the Earth's seismicity in the instrumental period, Di Giacomo et al point out some misuse of global catalogues and discuss the location issue for the Nov 11, 1922 earthquake. |
