Description
Summary:Acoustic technology has proven to be a well-established nondestructive technique for assessing potential product performance by identifying logs with high stiffness. In an ongoing endeavor to optimize merchandizing and enhance timber value recovery, 7 second growth Douglas-fir stands of similar age class in western Oregon were sampled, totaling 1,400 trees and more than 3,000 logs. This research investigated the effects of spatial as well as internal and external log characteristics on Douglas-fir wood stiffness. Stand-level in-forest log acoustic measurements, as well as dynamic modulus of elasticity values correlated well with the actual G1/G2 veneer grade.
