Summary:Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster, Ait) is a widely spread species in southwestern Europe, but its quality may vary considerably amongst production regions. In Portugal, this timber has a wide tradition for general construction and structural purposes. Recent changes in the European standardization raised the need to update the technical information generally available to end users on this timber, which had been obtained in the 1960s. A study of the properties of this timber produced in Portugal was therefore carried out with a special emphasis on strength grading and on the determination of characteristic values for mechanical properties. This paper presents general information on this timber for structural uses, with reference to the relevant European standards
