Summary:Bonding higher moisture content (MC) veneer composites with a phenol-formaldehyde (PF) adhesive requires a resin capable of overcoming problems associated with excessive adhesive migration from the glueline and retardation of resin cure. An adhesive with improved moisture-tolerant bonding properties was formulated that consisted of an alkaline insoluble but swellable dispersed PF phase, an alkaline soluble continuous phase, and a propylene carbonate additive. Methodology is described for forming the dispersed phase and for characterizing it through thermal softening measurements or by determining viscosity properties in caustic solutions. Significant bond quality improvements were found when comparing these dispersion adhesives with standard plywood adhesive formulations in the bonding of veneers with MCs of 10 to 12 percent
