Summary: | While a graduate student at the Roswell Park Memorial Institute, Enzo and colleagues described evidence of DNA-dependent RNA polymerase activity in purified infectious vaccinia virus particles, one of the first indications of the relative molecular independence of poxviruses from host cells. A seminal achievement in the early years of Virogenetics was the determination of the complete DNA sequence of the Copenhagen vaccine strain of vaccinia virus, the first complete sequence of a poxvirus genome to be reported. The realities and economic complexities of vaccine development, licensure and manufacturing were at times in conflict with scientific goals, and these tensions led Enzo and the parent organization to part company in 1995. |
