Summary: | An abstract of a study by Dutton and Penney examining a national audit of the outcome of medical management for ectopic pregnancy in Scotland is presented. Results show that local protocols for medical management of ectopic pregnancy varied in a number of areas, most notably in the exclusion criteria. Many recommendations within the local protocols differed from the recommendations in national guidance from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG). There are local variations in the provision of written information and the requirement for obtaining written-consent, both of which would be considered areas of good medical practice. Administration of Anti-D is recommended for Rh-negative women regardless of the management option, and it would seem appropriate to include this as part of any protocol. |
