Summary:Purpose: This is a study on the determining factors influencing generation Y mental health in private universities in Pahang. Understanding these factors will gain insight into improving generation Y mental health issues. Design/methodology/approach: The sample population of the study is generation Y (20 - 30 years and currently located in Pahang). The adopted approach is quantitative approach, to determine the relationships between variables of financial, social support, physical health, and mental health. 250 questionnaires were distributed and 220 managed to be collected. To determine the levels of influenced factors, this research uses questionnaires from previous studies. Findings: The findings show that the levels of respondents' financial distress and financial literacy were moderate. The study also shows that there is a positive but weak relationship between financial literacy and level of financial distress. Research limitations/implications: Future studies should examine a more comprehensive factor on Gen Y in different setting. In addition, in depth study of the factor that affected Gen Y mental health using qualitative study should also be considered for future studies. Practical implications: The implications of the study points to the fact that the organizations concerned would do well to invest in human resources, in particular, with respect to personal financial management for their employees as such knowledge investment would help raise the level of financial literacy among employees and achieve the organizations' own objectives of high productivity. Originality/value: The study explore the influence factor of Gen Y mental health issues in the education industry in which the outcome of this research could give some point of view to generation Y in preventing mental health issues
