Summary: | [...] is the nature of Braun's own involvement during those recent five decades: his own investment in the Polish theatre has been not so much as theatre historian or critic, but as a theatre director who for seventeen years was the artistic director and manager of one of Wroc¬aw's theatres. Underground productions, mounted during the Nazi occupation in Poland and in the Soviet-occupied territories, were acts of heroic will, where "both the actors and the audience risked punishment by imprisonment, deportation to concentration camps, or even death" (16). |
