Summary: | A common thread throughout Eastern Europe and the former USSR is that the massive capital costs associated with increasing or just maintaining their energy production, and the heavy environmental burdens associated with those supply systems, are causing the governments to begin rethinking their entire energy strategy. Because of the high inefficiency in the energy systems of the former centrally planned economies, the potential for improvement is great. With their resource-intensive and energy-inefficient industrial development creating severe environmental and health problems, many of their industrialized regions are no longer able to produce net benefits from continued industrial activity. From a business standpoint, the former centrally planned economies could provide an extremely large market for energy-efficient services and products. The most attractive opportunities include engineering and demand side management services. Market opportunities for export, licensing, and joint ventures should also exist for businesses producing and marketing energy-efficient products. |
