Description
Summary:Preliminary results from a research project on the economics of natural resources are presented. The project is designed to investigate the extent to which the voluminous research that has been conducted since the 1973 oil crisis can explain the economics of natural resources in general. The project is also intended to determine whether a more general model of the economics of natural resources could be derived from that research. The report traces the evolution of research on oil, bauxite, and copper. Initial results indicate that natural resources economics is the result of the interplay among: 1. the countries in which the resources are found, 2. the companies that are able to extract the resources, and 3. the users of those resources, perhaps as represented by their governments. Increased knowledge about the influences on resource policy can help each of these player groups develop a long-term strategy that can shift more bargaining power to the group.
