description Engineered nanoparticles represent a new class of man-made contaminants which are increasingly present in natural environments considering their large-scale production with accelerated growth in various engineering applications. This has driven several researches to study the interactions phenomena with the environment; in particular, the physical and chemical phenomena that occur in soils and waters exposed to waste disposal landfills. The general objective of this work is to simulate the leaching and interactions processes of impregnated soils with copper oxide nanoparticles in aqueous suspensions of TiO2 nanoparticles. Thus, in this study are addressed such phenomena and associate them with the transport of these nanomaterials and their impact on the environment. Column experiments were carried out in order to simulate the landfill layers used as protection barriers. These methodology helps to understand the impact of the production and controlled disposal of harmful nanomaterials, avoiding possible adverse effects on human health and costly remediation processes. The results obtained in the leaching column experiments demonstrated that the suspensions of TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) played the major role on the stabilization of the CuO nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) suspensions leading to diversified leaching nanoparticles to the suspensions, decreasing the efficiency of soil layers retention.
