Summary: | France is the laggard in the current eurozone upswing. For the first time since the introduction of the euro in 1999, the growth rate of France's real GDP clearly lagged behind that of the entire eurozone. Can Nicolas Sarkozy bring the country back on a growth path? According to Holger Schmieding, Bank of America, the chances that France can become the new growth engine in Europe were never so great as they are today. Nicolas Sarkozy not only has the right ideas, in Schmieding's opinion, he also has a clear political mandate to implement them. In those areas in which Sarkozy would like to do what is correct, in terms of the market economy, he will in all probability have both the political mandate as well as the power too push through his clearly sketched-out plan. In the areas in which Sarkozy has expressed less liberal ideas, the corset of the EU will limit his scope of action. Also Sebastian Wanke, DekaBank, Frankfurt am Main, believes that Sarkozy will be able to implement his proposals: This is indicated by his clear mandate, his open approach to governing and his carefully planned strategy. At the same time, the euro area is in the midst of a strong upswing. |
