Description
Summary:Applied behavior analysis (ABA) has demonstrated its capacity to solve a variety of socially important problems with diverse populations in a variety of settings. However, as a field, ABA has struggled to move from developmental disabilities to larger populations and clinical contexts. An opportunity exists for behavior analytic providers (e.g., board-certified behavior analysts and behavioral psychologists) to expand their scope of practice to reach a wider population within the arena of integrated behavioral health care, specifically within pediatric primary care. Additionally, ABA is well suited for the provision of brief, problem focused interventions, a shift in practice that has historically been difficult for psychologists who are not trained to work in the primary care setting or who lack strong behavioral training. The following commentary describes the integrated behavioral health model and how behavior analytic providers can adjust their practice to fill the unique role of behavioral health provider in pediatric primary care.
