Description
Summary:A simple, inexpensive, fast, and sensitive method for improving detection limits using a novel sample concentrator is described. Analytes are concentrated on the tip of a GC syringe by evaporating the solvent with a flow of nitrogen. The increased sensitivity of the concentrator permits extraction with lower volumes, minimizes disposal costs, and simplifies sample preparation. The concentrator improved sensitivities for selected drugs (7.6−12.8 times), pesticides (12−17 times), and C11−C16 alkanes (1.5−6 times). With or without use of the concentrator, relative standard deviations of peak areas were less than 10%. Diverse GC and GC/MS applications ranging from forensic toxicology to environmental analysis can benefit from the improved detection limits provided by this concentrator design.
