Summary: | [...]as described in the environmental impact analysis of construction material carried out by Haapio and Viitaniemi (2008), the production phase has been identified as the one with the highest environmental impact for newly built construction, and opaque elements are the major cause of such impact. In case of retrofits, different configurations has been analysed: an existing wall (R = 0.9 m2K/W) has been paired with insulated, hollow, or ventilated lightweight blocks. [...]the assembly methods provide flexibility to the system. Component and system analysis and results In relation to the multidisciplinary nature of the project, the following were carried out: - thermophysical analyses in the laboratory and through simulations with numerical models; - life cycle assessment (LCA) through modelling in accordance with ISO 14040:2006 standards; - analysis of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions of the clay and lime plaster in accordance with the ISO 16000 series standards, and analysis of the indoor pollutant absorption capacity; - technological and mechanical testing of the BLOCK_PLASTER prototype blocks and of the plaster prototypes. [...]the related scientific literature includes a number of experiments that identify clay as a material with the ability to dilute indoor pollutants (Darling et al., 2012). |
