Summary:What signifies the Australian context as unique is an historical moment of opportunity in the 1970s when activist women working within a progressive federal government provided a strong foundation for the establishment of Women's Studies programs in Australia's publicly funded University system. What we have described here is a pragmatic response - specific concrete activities that maintain feminism through conservative times - ensuring that although the women's movement is marginalised from the mainstream political environment, feminist activism is still strong and creative.
